On Sept. 1 through Sept. 3, 2006, Kendall County ARES supported communications for the "Rolling on the River - Ride for the Environment" events. The major communications requirement was for the Bike ride on Sept. 2, 2006. This invloved Communications from our Net Control to five (5) rest areas, two SAG vehicles (also running APRS), the event coordinator and the event director. We provided communications to the river front for tracking canoe activies as well. We also supported communications on Sept. 3, 2006 for the scheduled canoe rides between Yorkville and Silver Springs State Park. As cell phone coverage is very spotty in the area, the availability of HAM radio and operators was greatly appreciated by the event coordinators. Additionally, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR) who supported SAG operations stated that they had not worked with HAM radio previously, but would be looking for local HAM radio operators, clubs, and ARES support in the future to support events such as these in the future after seeing our operation.
